Annotation

Christopher P. George wrote about this monument: "According to Francis F. Beirne in his 1951 The Amiable Baltimoreans, for many years, our city's Italian community had an ambiguous relationship with de Paulmier's monument, apparently because a local legend held that the obelisk was not really a monument to the discoverer Christopher Columbus at all but was in honor of a horse of the same name! Whether the community's neglect of the monument stemmed from this reason, or simply that they preferred a lifelike representation of the explorer, a new Columbus statue was dedicated on October 12, 1892 in Druid Hill Park which became the focus of the annual celebration of Columbus."
