Description

Renaissance fountain made up of a circular reservoir with circumference of 9 meters. In the middle of the reservoir is a stone statue of knight in armour with sword and shield with the Slovak coats of arms. The knight represents Roland, the legendary defender of municipal rights, although some see in the figure a statue of Emperor Maximilian II. At the foot of the statue is on each side the coat of arms of Bratislava.

Annotation

The fountain was built by Emperor Maximilian II, after a large fire broke out in the city upon his crowning in 1563. The fountain was finished nine years later.
