Translation: The four elements fountain.
The sculpture, carried out by Nils Sjögren, symbolises the four elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Fire has been disastrous for the city. The high fire reminds of the 1799 fire which caused great devastation. The falling water reminds of the city's former role as seafaring town. Earth is symbolised by the lower hemisphere and the air by the heaven with sun, moon and stars.
Important are also scenes of Good and Evil Life. The north side shows Evil, represented by death - the grim reaper - with broken helmet and war bombs. People are fleeing and a woman prays to a cricifix for pity. The Good life is illustrated on the south side with a boy's 'barbackaritt' in summer, a serenade at the window, a rural 'kärlekspar" and 'familjelyckan.'
Professor Nils Sjögren (1894-1952) started the large sculpture in 1941, because of the World Wars, however, lack of material, restrictions and funds there was considerable delays and he never completed the work during his lifetime. His son, the sculptor Bengt Sjögren, completed the work.
The fountain was inaugurated 1958.
