Description

Bronze statue of Gogol' sitting on a granite chair. He is depicted in the last years of his life: patient, frustrated, lonely.
On four sides of the pedestal are bronze friezes of Gogol's greatest characters.

Front: scene from The Government Inspector - Ревизор; a small, puny Khlestakov - Хлестаков, almost standing on tiptoe, and the officials Bobchinsky - Бобчинский and Dobchinsky - Добчинский.
Left; the characters of Dead Souls - Мёртвые души

Back: the characters from Petersburg stories, standing in a theatrical pose Poprishchin from Diary of a Madman, and wrapped in his cloak, Akaky. Next to the cold, impassive fashionable ladies and dignitaries from the Nevsky Prospect is fast walking the young artist Charco, bearing a huge portrait under his arm.
Right: In the center Taras Bulba - Тарас Бульба and his sons Ostap and Andrei. To the left of Taras are characters of Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka - Вечера на хуторе близ Диканьки and its sequel Mirgorod - Миргород, and to the right the main characters of The Tale of How Ivan Ivanovich Quarreled with Ivan Nikiforovich - Повесть о том, как поссорился Иван Иванович с Иваном Никифоровичем and Afanasios Ivanovich and Pul'kheriya Ivanovna from The Old World Landowners - Старосветские помещики.

Annotation

This seated bronze figure of Gogol, finished in 1909, was placed on Gogol Boulevard. Criticized for its impressionistic style and dark mood, said to be hated by Stalin himself, it was moved in 1952 amid controversy, and replaced with a straightforward Soviet-style representation of Gogol by sculptor Nikolai Tomsky.
