Tomb-monument erected by subscription, on the initiative of Henrique V. de Castro, 3-12-1917. |
During the First World War, on 3 December 1916, the first German attack on the island of Madeira took place, a German U-Boat torpedoed and sank four ship anchored in the bay of Funchal: the French gunboat Surprise, the French submarine-carrier Kanguroo, the British cable laying vessel Dacia and the Portuguese barge that was to supply the Surprise coal. In this attack 33 foreign crew and eight Portuguese men working in the Blandy company that owned the coal business died. Afterwards, the U-boat bombarded Funchal for two hours.
The following year, promoted by public subscription by Banker Henrique Vieira de Castro, a monument was raised to the dead. It was unveiled 3 December 1917 at the former Cemitério das Angústias, where now the Parque de Santa Catarina is. In 1946 transferred to the present location
The sculpture placed on the monument is the responsibility of the sculptor Francisco Franco. In this there is a large plastic proximity to the work of Rodin, and in particular in comparison with the sculpture "L'Enfant prodigue", the dramatic intensity and capacity of formal synthesis. The sculpture was cast in Funchal, Foundry Street June 5, 1917. .Your banner here? Click for information.
