Francisco Franco (1885-1955),
Madeiran artist, father of moder-
nism scul[p]ture in Portugal, studied
in Lisbon and lived in Paris, where
he made The Sower scul[p]ture (1921-
1925). Francisco Franco was much
influenced by classical sculptors,
Rodin and Maillol. The scul[p]ture
The Sower was exhibited, in Paris,
in 1924, at Salon de la Société
Nationale des Beaux-Arts des
Beaux-Arts [!] and for the first time
in Funchal in 1936.

Annotation

This sculpture was made in 1919 and cast in 1923; exhibited in Paris in 1924 and for the first time in Funchal in 1936, where it was placed on the Campo da Barca. In 1989 it was placed in Saint Catherine Park and in 2009 at the present location.
