Description

The station was designed between 1886 and 1887 by Portuguese architect José Luís Monteiro. The façade shows three portraits: in top center King Luís I and in the center of the first floor portraits of the Father of Portuguese Railways Fontes Pereira de Melo and George Stephenson.

English civil engineer and mechanical engineer who built the first public inter-city railway line in the world to use steam locomotives (Wikipedia).

The statue of King Sebastian in a niche between the two arches is on 3 May 2016 accidentally destroyed by a person who knocked it over by climbing up for a photograph.
