The station was designed between 1886 and 1887 by Portuguese architect José Luís Monteiro. The façade shows three portraits: in top center King Luís I and in the center of the first floor portraits of the Father of Portuguese Railways Fontes Pereira de Melo and George Stephenson.

The statue of King Sebastian in a niche between the two arches is on 3 May 2016 accidentally destroyed by a person who knocked it over by climbing up for a photograph.
