O cante, qualquer que seja a opção que defendamos para explicar a sua génese,
teve como berço o campo e como colo o trabalho; ele é a expressão musical das
nossas gentes, companheiro dos trabalhadores nas fainas agrícolas, num tempo
em que estas eram feitas com o trabalho humano, antes da mecanização. E no fim
da jornada, o cante continuava na taberna, entre um copo de vinho, um petisco e
uma conversa.
Cantando, os trabalhadores amenizavam o peso das tarefas agrícolas, exprimiam
e partilhavam emoções, e foram moldando uma cultura muito própria, simbiose
de várias culturas cruzadas entre povos do sul.
Foi e é aqui, na vastidão da planície, o lugar privilegiado do cante, onde a voz do
vento soa mais alto em harmonia com os sons da terra e lhe confere sonoridades
de beleza infinita.
São os Homens das “Terras do Cante”, com um carácter de verticalidade ímpar e
um saber musical que se perde nos primórdios do tempo, que este monumento
homenageia, representando um abraço entre o passado e o futuro do Mundo
Rural e do Cante Alentejano.
