Description

In the center of the Fonte da Misericórdia stands under the six-pointed pinnacle a marble equestrian statue of D. Sancho II, with the bust slightly tilted back, supporting in the left arm a shield with the coat-of-arms of Portugal, while the right arm shows traces of mutilation provoked by vandals.

The fountain was designed by Diogo Marques, architect of the Royal House, and inaugurated on 23 June 1622, during the monarchy of the Philips, a curiosity for the time because it was the fountain includes a representation of a 'territorial' King displaying the insignia of Portugal.
