Statue of Liberty

Commemoriation of the Battle of Praia Bay, on 11 August 1829, when Portuguese loyalists defeated a Miguelite fleet. As a result of this victory, Queen Maria II, acted to recognize Praia's residents for their heroism by appending 'da Vitória' (of the Victory) to its name (1837)

Description

Marble statue of a woman with a palm branch, holding a shield with the coat of arms showing a tower, a ship and a shield with the date 11 de agusto de 1829. Next to her sits a goshawk with spread-out wings. The statue is placed on a marble pedestal with at the front a medaillon with a map of the 1829 Battle of Praia.
