Meirāni, Livonia, 1882 - Airīte, Saldus District, 1919
commander of 1st Latvian Independent Battalion
Modern sculpure of black granite and steel, with a portrait of Kalpaks.
The monument, named Against the Current, symbolically shows the point of a sword that splits the hostile current of invasion and occupation. The face on the monument is almost holographic and seems to follow you as you pass by. The appearance also depends on the sunlight (or lack of it)
latvijas armijas pirmajam komandierim
ko varu vēl tev, tēvzeme,
par sirdi vairāk dot

I can have you, motherland,
of the heart to give more ...
The architect of the monument is Andris Veidemanis.
