You know yourselves about my love to you and your love to me in the years of my service as a bishop: this
love will never come to an end and will prevail over death. I will continue in the other life praying for you as
for my children.
From the Testamentary Letter (about 1875)

"You know yourselves about my love to you and your
love to me in the years of my service as a bishop: this
love will never come to an end and will prevail over
death. I will continue in the other life praying for you as
for my children."
From the Testamentary Letter (about 1875)

Bishop Motiejus Valančius
(1801-1875)

For 25 episcopal years since 1850, the great shepherd
of the Diocese of Samogitia tended his flock, leading
them towards God, arduously nurturing Catholic faith,
virtue, and national consciousness, and protecting them
from Russification and denationalisation. He was a
founder of parish schools and a successful temperance
movement in 1858. During the press ban period
(1864-1904), he took care of underground schools and
the Lithuanian publications. He is also known as an
initiator of Lithuanian prose, a historian and a religious
writer. Following the Tsarist transfer of the centre of the
Diocese from Varniai to Kaunas in 1864, he moved to
Kaunas and spent there the rest of his life. The Bishop
was interred in the crypt of the Kaunas Cathedral
Basilica of Apostles St Peter and St Paul.
