Inscription(s)

in commemoration of the gallantry of
john n. westaway
when the s.s. normandy foundered 17 march 1870

Annotation

The monument commemorates the gallantry of John Westaway, a passenger on the Normandy who showed great courage when it sank. He sacrificed his seat on the lifeboat of the i>Normandy to a Miss Albina Falle, giving her his coat as protection against the elements.

At a few meters distance is the Harvey monument, an obelisk erected to commemorate Captain Henry Beckford Harvey and the crew of the Normandy.

Both memorials remember those who lost their lives in thick fog when the Normandy of the Steam Packet Company, a subsidary of the London and South-Western Railway, sank after a collision with the Mary (893 tons) on 17 March 1870, which is well documented . The Mary was on route from Odessa to Grimsby with a cargo of maize. 34 lives were lost.
