1880 |
The monument consists of a high Doric column, topped by the five-pointed star of Italy. Around the column is a band with four laurel wreaths encircling the dates 1848|1849, 1859|1860, 1861|1866, and 1867|1870.
It stands on a base in two tiers.
The upper part of the base shows reliefs of Vittorio Emanuele II and Giuseppe Garibaldi, both flanked in the corners of the same pedestal, by reliefs of the instruments and weapons used in the fights of the time. For example, the cannon, the bayonet, the sword and the headgear worn by Giuseppe Garibaldi.
A V. EMANUELE (Turin 1820 - Rome 1878), King of Sardinia from 1849 until 17 March 1861, when he assumed the title King of Italy to become the first king of a united Italy since the 6th century; considered, with Garibaldi, Cavour, and Mazzini, as one of Italy's 'fathers of the fatherland' (Wikipedia). |
campione invitto (Nice 1807 - Caprera 1882), Italian general, politician and nationalist who played a large role in the history of Italy; considered, with Cavour, Victor Emmanuel II, and Mazzini, as one of Italy's 'fathers of the fatherland' (Wikipedia). |
The lower base shows the twelve coats-of-arms of Arezzo and the towns in the province.
