Description

Marble statue generally known as 'Saturn devouring his children' but actually a complex allegory of birth. The sculpture was removed from the Este villa of Tivoli (Rome) by Duke Ercole III d'Este in 1786 when he moved the art school he founded six years earlier. By the will of the duke the sculpture was placed at the entrance hall of the academy On the stand the inscription "Quicquid est temporis studiis proferamus" invites to devote to study all available time.
