Statues - Hither & Thither

 

Description

The statue is made by the will of Hercules II d'Este. The commission of the work dates back to 1550 while the execution was completed in June 1553. At first the statue was placed in the square of the Rocca but, following the destruction of the fortification in 1704, the work was abandoned and only in 1727 it was brought back to the center of the current square Matteotti. The present statue on the square is a copy, the original is in the Centro Culturale San Benedetto.
