Annotation

Torro Colombo, dating from 1300, is claimed to be the birth house of Christopher Columbus. In 1957 the tower was restored by an American emigrant on his own costs, and made it into a Columbian museum. The structure, which was originally 28 meters high, was lowered in 1894 and 1936.

Translation of the explanatory sign near the tower: "This tower house (on a site where a defensive structure was already known to exist in the 13th century) is traditionally considered to be the ancestral home of the Columbus family. In 1957, on his return from America, an emigrant paid for the restoration of the building to be used as a Columbian museum. The Tower, already known in the 18th century as the birthplace of the navigator, was repeatedly lowered (in 1894 and 1936). Its original height was 28m. It now belongs to the City."
