The Silver Brosna

(An Lámh Airgid)
by Ann Meldon Hugh
Commissioned by Westmeath County Council

This sculpture celebrates the history and beauty of the River Brosna and its
importance to Mullingar as a place of trade and industry. The 13th century Town
Seal has a representation of teh Brosna flowing beneath a mill wheel.
An 11th century poem by Cuan O Lotchain lists the High Kings seven privileges as ..

"Fish from the Boyne.
Deer from Lubrich,
Fruit from Manann,
Gresses from the river Brosna....."

The people represent the generations who have lived on the banks of the river. The
Bull and warriors depict the legend of ath feine a crossing place over the Brosna
And the site of a battle in the Tain Bo Cuailgne.
