Description

Bronze sculpture of a woman emerging from a wall.

Inscription(s)

At the foot of the sculpure are some stones with inscriptions, which are hardly readable (we have photo). On two rocks flanking the sculpture are bronze plaques with the following text:

Equality Emerging - The People

This John Behan sculpture unveiled in 2001 by Mr. Des Geraghty,
General President of SIPTU and Professor Iognáid O'Muircheartaigh,
President of NUI Galway and Convenor of Líonra, was inspired by an
idea of Eddie Higgins of SIPTU and Nuala Keher of NUI Galway.
It was part funded by the European Social Fund
and presented through Galway's Mayor, Councillor Donal Lyons,
to the people of Galway City.

Equality Emerging - The Purpose

This statue is dedicated to people everywhere who are struggling
for equality and to those suffering because of its absence.
The emerging figure represents the forces for equality,
the wall, those people and systems in opposition.
Overall the sculpture celebrates our achievements to date
and acknowledges the strugg;e which still lies ahead.

"Above a hole in the ground
No matter what stands
Measures nothing of life unless,
It touches our hearts
Inspires our humanity to act,
And then to persevere."
