In 1965 the park at Eyre Square was renamed the "John F. Kennedy Memorial Park" and was a limestone monument to the late president erected. In August 1965, Cardinal Richard Cushing of Boston, in the presence of President Éamon de Valera and Taoiseach Seán Lemass, dedicated and blessed the park and unveiled the memorial monument. The original monument was a limestone wall, 2m high and 3m wide, with as its centrepiece a bronze profile of President Kennedy, which was cast from a bas-relief wood carving by local artist Albert O'Toole, with an inscription in English and Irish. In 1975, the monument collapsed and was removed; it was subsequently redesigned and re-erected. In the early 2000s, during the Eyre Square Enhancement Project, it was relocated to the east of the park.
