Bronze statue of a buttermaid, holding her butter pat, standing on the base of an old water pump. The butter pat was an important part of the butter-making process, and furtger milk churns and a mill wheel, in recognition of the importance of the dairy industry to Newcastle West area.
Further on the water pump structure is a stone mill wheel to the front elevation and limestone milk churns to side elevation. Surrounding the monument in the pavement are circular cast bronze and iron plaques commemorating local poet Michael Hartnett. In front of the monument is a mosaic plaque with a cow.
