Statues - Hither & Thither

 

Description

The Holy Trinity Church was designed by the Pain brothers in 1834 in the honour of Father Theobald Mathew. It was opened in 1850. The Gothic-Revival portico was added in 1889. There are six statues at the front facade.

Side wing, west:
1. St. Francis of Assisi, monk with book.
   born Giovanni Francesco di Bernardone (1181/82 - 1226), an Italian friar and preacher. He founded among others the Franciscan Order. Saint Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in history (Wikipedia).
   portico:
2. St. Clara, nun with chalice.
   (1194 - 1253), one of the first followers of Saint Francis of Assisi. She founded the Order of Poor Ladies, a monastic religious order for women in the Franciscan tradition (Wikipedia).

4. St. Anthony of Padua, monk with the child Jesus sitting on a book.
   born Fernando Martins de Bulhões, (Lisbon c. 1195 - Padua 1231), priest and friar of the Franciscan Order, known for his preaching and expert knowledge of scripture (Wikipedia).
5. St. Mary, standing on a snake.
   Saint Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ (Wikipedia). Side wing, east:
6. St. Joseph (?) (the statue is weathered, a male saint with a lily and possibly a carpenter's square).
   the husband of the Virgin Mary and the earthly father of Jesus Christ (in distinction to God, his "heavenly father") (Wikipedia).
