Kapisztrán Szent János

Saint John of Capistrano

(1386 - 1456)
Franciscan friar from Italy. Famous as a preacher, theologian, and inquisitor, he earned himself the nickname 'the Soldier Saint' when in 1456 at age 70 he led a crusade against the invading Ottoman Empire. He is canonized in 1690

Bronze statue of Saint John of Capistrani with flag on a double cross staff, urging with apostolic enthousiasm his men to follow him. Under his feet two Turks.

Annotation

Erected at the 465th anniversary of Saint John's death and the 700th anniversary of the Franciscan Order in Hungary. The model for the main figure was Lendvay István.
