"the original of this statue, which depicts the bard as an actor bowing to his audience was created in 1960 by renowned hungarian-born australian sculptor, andor meszaros (budapest 1900 - melbourne 1972), for the australian city of ballarat. this thriving city founded during the gold rush in the 1850s, is a cultural centre in victoria, that takes pride in its history and ... heritage. in addition to the statue by ander meszaros, ballarat has other hungarian links to boast, writer gyorgy sárkozt has a novel of his ...., and the first gold medal claimed by the hungarian team during the 1956 melbourne olympic games ... won here by kayakers janos urbanyi and lászlo fábián. on visiting australia in 1998, dr. karoly nagy, a retired attorney and an admirer of shakespeare, envisaged that a replica be made of the statue and be erected in budapest. on returning to hungary he founded the shakespeare statue committee, and began to raise funds for the project. his plans went into fruition when in 2002m with the approval of the city of ballarat, the moulding was organised on site under the guidance of andor meszaros' son, michael, who is also a sculptor. the casting was done at the foundry of hungarian sculpter, gábor mihály. fundraising was organised in australia, hungary and england; contributions came from friends, relatives and associations two-thirds of the costs were borne by andor meszaros' widow, elizabeth, and their two sons, michael and daniel. may the statue serve as a spiritual link among the discerning public in australia, hungary, great britain and vi- sitors to budapest from countries around the world. erected on the 23rd of april 2003, the 439th anniversary of shakespeare's birth and the 387th anniversary of his death."

A MAGYAR SHAKESPEARE-KULTUSZ EMLÉKFALA
a magyarországi shakespeare-kultusz több mint kétszázéves. a kez-
detekre az akkori pest két közelben állo szinháza, a rondella és a pesti német színház emlékeztet. a máig tartó folytonossághoz töb- bek között az alábbi -már elhúnyt- műfordítók, rendezök, szín- igazgatók és színészek teljesítménye járult hozzá.

In 1959, Hungarian-born sculptor Andor Meszaros won a competition to create a statue of William Shakespeare for Ballarat, largely because he reinterpreted the master as an artist hungry for validation.
The bronze statue, which stands outside Ballarat's Civic Hall, depicts Shakespeare receiving applause after a performance, his body inclined with deep gratitude.
Today [May 1 2002] is the 30th anniversary of the renowned sculptor's death and, if Andor Meszaros were still alive, he, too, would bow graciously. For the people of his beloved Budapest now want their own copy of the statue, in order to bolster their post-communist civic pride and pay homage to an accomplished expatriate.
The idea originated with Karoly Nagy, a former adviser to Hungary's Attorney General, who became enthralled by the notion of erecting a statute of Shakespeare in Budapest. While visiting Victoria in the late 1990s, Nagy saw the Ballarat bronze and regarded it as the world's finest.
"He said he was going to go through thick and thin to get it," said Elizabeth Meszaros, Andor's 91-year-old widow.
Nagy formed a committee, which included Budapest's mayor, Gabor Demszky, to raise funds. The plan is to make a mould of the Ballarat statue and have it cast in Hungary. Ballarat council is backing the project.
Hungarians are mad on Shakespeare - many insist his works are more poignant in their tongue than in English. All Shakespeare's works have been translated into Hungarian and his plays are performed regularly.
Michael Meszaros, son of Andor and himself a sculptor, says the Ballarat statue humanises Shakespeare.
"I think the difference between this and almost every other statue is that the others all depict Shakespeare as a writer. My father's conception was that Shakespeare was basically an actor, director and producer - there wasn't the division between writer and theatre as there is now. He (his father) was talking about a businessman trying to get bums on seats."
