Description

Bronze, 4½ m tall, statue of Széchenyi with a sword on his left and in his right hand a roll. The statue stands on a 8.34 m tall granite base, flanked by four allegorical figures representing Széchenyi's four areas of interest:

  1. Trade, represented by Minerva.
    (Παλλὰς Ἀθηνᾶ) in Greek, or Minerva, in Roman mythology, is the goddess of war, civilization, wisdom, etc. She is often depicted with an owl, which symbolizes her ties to wisdom. (Wikipedia: Athena and Minerva).
  2. Navigation, represented by Neptune.
    Poseidon (Ποσειδῶν) in Greek, or Neptunus, in Roman mythology, is the god of water and the sea (Wikipedia: Poseidon and Neptune).
  3. Industry, represented by Vulcan.
    Vulcan (Latin: Vulcanus), Roman god of both beneficial and hindering fire, including the fire of volcanoes (Wikipedia).
  4. Agriculture, represented by Ceres.
    Demeter (Δημήτηρ) in Greek and Ceres in Roman mythology, the goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships (Wikipedia: Ceres and Demeter).
