Description

County Hall with richly decorated facades, with a few allegorical figures. A statue of Honour - a woman with a laurel crown - is in a niche under a baldachin, flanked by reliefs of a man with a sword (fortitude?) and a woman with a mirror and a pair of compasses. Over the principal entrance are low relief figures representing Justice (sword and scales) and Education (globe and book), and right Progress and Hygieia (goddess of good health).

COUNTY HALL
Opened on 22nd Feb. 1898 and built on the site of the former Rishworth House to a design by architect James S. Gibson, this was the seat of the West Riding County Council until 1974, then West Yorkshire County Council until its abolition in 1986. Acquired by the City of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council in 1987.
