Memorial to the Hull volunteers of the International Brigade who defended democracy and fought fascism in Spain during the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39.
On top of the column, around the sculpture is twice text:
¡NO PASARAN!
And on the side of the column in large letters:
DEMOCRACY · PEACE · FREEDOM
and in small letters the names of the known volunteers from Hull:
SAM WALTERS · BERT WILSON · OLIVE SMITH · JACK ATKINSON · MORRIS MILLER · JIM BENTLEY · ROBERT WARDLE · JOE LATUS · RICHARD MORTIMER
On the plint the name Frieda Stewart was added later.
Four of the these ten Hull volunteers - Jack Atkinson, James Bentley, Morris Miller and Robert Wardle - were killed in action. Some who returned became prominent in the community such as Joe Latus, a communist who became a director of the Hull FC rugby league club.
