Bronze sculpture two hands holding a sphere.

During the Second World War this city suffered
365 air raid alerts and 77 actual air raids.

These raids took place between the 8th August 1940 and the 23rd April 1943.
There were over 9,000 casualties of whom2,241 were killed.

This memorial 'The Tree of Life' by Lorenzo Quinn is dedicated to the
memory of all victims of the Blitz on Birmingham.

The memorial was donated to the city of Birmingham by the
Halcyon Gallery on behalf of its founders Raena and Lionel Green,
in association with Birmingham City Council and Birmingham
Air Raids Rememnrance Association.

Annotation

Unveiled 8 October 2005. The sculpture explains his design as follows:
"The sculpture is called The Tree of Life because it was thanks to these people, that many people here today owe their own lives. It is also a symbol, the outstretched hands representing a search for a better future.
The rock the tree stands on represents our conscience, and this should always weigh us to the ground and we should never forget the past, but learn from it and grow upon it as a beautiful tree, to give shade to future generations.
