Description

Two statues of father and son Edwards dressed in suits. To the right Ifan ab Owen Edwards holding paper in right hand, and to the left Owen Morgan Edwards with a book in his hand. The statue is set in arbour of slate pavings; a stone relief to rear depicts figures tending the Welsh language in the form of a tree.

Annotation

The statues were commissioned by Urdd Gobaith Cymru (The Welsh League of Youth) in 1972 to celebrate the Urdd's 50th birthday. The sculptor was Jonah Jones; the cilfach (arbour) was a collaborative enterprise between Jones and the architect Quentin Hughes. The stone surround is Arenig granite and the relief carving is by Jones. The seats are of teak. The statues were unveiled on 23 September 1972 by Lady Edwards, widow of Syr Ifan. The enclosure in which the statues stand dates back to 1959 and was built originally for a monument to O.M. Edwards to celebrate the centenary of his birth. This monument was removed in 1972 to make way for the present statue and was taken to Coleg Meirionnydd at Dolgellau.
