Annotation

In the presence of the almost 80 year old Lord Tredegar, the statue was unveiled by the Earl of Plymouth on 25 October 1909, the 55th anniversary of the day on which Lord Tredegar led a troop of XVII Lancers in the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava:
Lord Tredegar, who is in his eightieth year, was visibly moved by the ceremony, and a brief address he recalled the words of the French General on the charge of the Light Brigade, "It is magnificent, but it is not war." "I don't know exactly what that general would call war," remarked his Lordship, amid laughter, "but the charge was something very nearly like war." (Laughter).
