Sculptures at the St Mary Redcliffe |
artist unknown
19th century |
The church of Saint Mary Redcliffe was constructed from the 12th to the 15th centuries. The spire fell after being struck by lightning in 1446 and was not rebuilt until 1872.
Several sculptures are found on the exterior of the church, mainly at the tower and the north porch. All sculptures are from the 19th century.
The west and north façade of the tower have in the lowest tier both a series of seven statues of seated figures in niches divided by columns. In both, the central figure is Christ, the twelve others are the Twelve apostles.
