Dolphin Fountain |
Henry Poole & Edwin Alfred Rickards
1912 |
In front of the Victoria Rooms is a large fountain, forming the centrepiece of a collection of sculptures, the statue of King Edward VII looking over the fountain, and in front of the Victoria Rooms two bronze lions and on the pediment above, a fine Grecian relief sculpture.
The fountain by the sculptor Poole and architect Rickards is emblematic of the association of Bristol's history with ther sea. The sculpture shows a reclining merman and mermaid to the sides, and in the centre, instead of some apex with a further figure or tall series of cascades, there are broad, low shells from which the water bubbles and falls - this because the statue of Edward had to be visible from the square.
