Aluminium reliefs of three 'stills' of a cartwheeling boy, on a brick wall.
The sculpture is a gift of the city of Düsseldorf to commemorate the thirty year anniversary of the twinning of the two towns.
this group of figures of cartwheeling boys was erected to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the link between reading and düsseldorf established by the late phoebe cusden in 1947 when she was mayor of reading

when, in 1678, düsseldorf's prince jan wellem was returning from his wedding, a wheel of his coach worked loose, a lad sprang forward and turning cartwheels beside it held it firm, for this he received a gold ducat. it is still the tradition for düsseldorf children to earn a pfennnig bny turning cartwheels in the city's main street, the köningsallee. |
