The sculpture is a gift of the city of Düsseldorf to commemorate the thirty year anniversary of the twinning of the two towns.

this group of figures of cartwheeling
boys was erected to mark the thirtieth
anniversary of the link between reading
and düsseldorf established by the late

when, in 1678, düsseldorf's prince jan wellem
was returning from his wedding, a wheel
of his coach worked loose, a lad sprang
forward and turning cartwheels beside it
held it firm, for this he received a gold ducat.
it is still the tradition for düsseldorf children
to earn a pfennnig bny turning cartwheels in the
city's main street, the köningsallee.
