Statue depicting Captain Chavasse and a Liverpool Scottish stretcher bearer attending a wounded soldier.
Liverpool Heroes This sculpture commemorates the life and deeds of Captain Noel Godfrey Chavasse VC & Bar MC, RAMC, Medical Officer to the 10th Battalion (Liverpool Scottish) King's Liverpool Regiment, and fifteen other recipients of the Victoria Cross who were born in Liverpool and whose names appear around the base. Captain Chavasse, son of the second Bishop of Liverpool, was the only man to be awarded two Victoria Crosses during World War I and died on 4th August 1917 of wounds received in Flanders. Several of the others named also made the supreme sacrifice. May this memorial remind us all of the debt we owe to such men. "Greater lover hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" |
Erected with the support of many ordinary citizens of Merseyside and beyond who acknowledge the bravery of such men as these. To all of you and those Regimental Associations, local businessmen and organisations who contributed, we, and the families of those named, are eternally grateful. We do not seek to glorigy war but rather to show the suffering, sacrifice and incredible valour which war demands and will always demand. Noel Chavasse VC Memorial Association 17th August 2008. Sculptor: Tom Murphy, Liverpool. |
