Stephen Broadbent
1990 |
Iron sculpture of two figures embracing each other.
Identical copies are in Belfast and Glasgow. They were all unveiled on the same day.
In a brochure relating to the unveiling, Broadbent stated (quoted by Cavanagh):
The aim has been to unite three cities and various communities – each with historical links and stark problems [The sculpture] is a very simple statement of a basic desire. Through their embrace, two figures become one. This unity is emphasised by the root solidarity of the form. The individuals have become grounded in each other, potentially to become one in 'body and spirit'. The figures are universal. Within their features can be identified any one of us, any group of us, transcending the boundaries of gender, colour or creed.
In 2005 and 2009 Broadbent made a second set of the Reconciliation Triange, with identical sculptures as the first, but now with reliefs at the foot related to slave trade. These three are placed in Liverpool (Merseyside Maritime Museum), Richmond (Virginia), and Cotonou (Republic of Benin).
