Durham, County North East England St Andrew's Way / A 167 |

Joseph Hillier
2009 |
16 metre / 53 feet tall welded steel grid representing a human head, with five laser-cut figures working and climbing on the grid.
The sculpture celebrates the North East's industrial heritage.
The sculptor said about this work:
We wanted to make something which celebrated the work which goes on in Newton Aycliffe every day. This is a working town, people here make stuff. I'm a sculptor, I make stuff, we have that in common. My aim has always been to create a sculpture, which is a beautiful and poignant reflection of the relationship between humanity, technology and matter. I also hope the work will find a lasting home amongst the people of Newton Aycliffe and that they enjoy their new sculpture for years to come.
