Yinka Shonibare

London / Nelson's Ship in a Bottle   London / Nelson's Ship in a Bottle

Large glass bottle with in it a 1:30 scale model of HMS Victory, the ship captained by Nelson. The only significant departure from the historical Victory is the use of richly patterned ?Dutch Wax? fric for the 37 sails. This is a trademark of the artist?s wor and is commonly associated with African dress and symbolic of African identity and independence.

From 2010 to 2012 it stood at the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square.
