Description

Building said to be in the Italian Renaissance style (but actually in a high Victorian style with a steep pitched roof resembling that of a French chateau), designed by Davis and Emanuel and constructed by John Mowlem & Co. On the front of the building are five statues, "the first four emphasising the schools literary and scientific traditions, the last being a religious martyr, a famous lawyer, and the author of Utopia":
    Facing Embankment, from left to right:
  1. BACON - Sir Francis Bacon (London 1561 - Highgate, Middlesex 1626), English philosopher and statesman (Wikipedia).
  2. SHAKSPEARE - William Shakespeare (Stratford-upon-Avon 1564 - id. 1616), English poet and playwright (Wikipedia).
  3. MILTON. - John Milton (1608-1674), English poet, polemicist, and man of letters (Wikipedia).
  4. NEWTON - Sir Isaac Newton, (Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth, Lincoln, 1643 - Kensington, 1727), English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, natural philosopher, alchemist, and theologian (Wikipedia)..

    Facing Carpenter Street:

  5. MORE - Sir Thomas More (London 1478 - London 1535), English lawyer, social philosopher, author, statesman and noted Renaissance humanist (Wikipedia).

The top floor windows are flanked by pairs of allegorical women, showing the different subjects of study:
  1. geometry - mathematics
  2. drawing - music
  3. classics - poetry
  4. sacred history - ancient history
  5. chemistry - mechanics
