Annotation

The state of Virginia offered the cast to London in 1914 to mark the centenary of the Treaty of Ghent, and thus of Anglo-American peace.

Sculptor

Jean-Antoine Houdon (Versailles 1740 - Paris 1828), French sculptor. His portrait is on the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse (Wikipedia).
