Description

Stained glass window with in the center a full figure of Matthew Flinders, "Matthew flinders 1774-1814" and on the sides portrait medallions of Joseph Banks and George Bass. Above Banks is the coat of arms of the Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge with motto nvllivs in verba ("On the word of no man," or "take nobody's word for i") and above Bass the Naval Defence Coat of Arms. In the lower part a map of the South Coast of Australia with Flinders' ship Investigator.

Annotation

St Marys church in Donington hosts a display dedicated to Matthew Flinders. It includes a stained glass window, a bust and a first edition of A Voyage to Terra Australis.

Biographies

Sir Joseph Banks, 1st Baronet, GCB, PRS (London 1743 - London 1820), English naturalist, botanist and patron of the natural sciences. (Website).
