In front of the statue are three stones with inscriptions. On the central stone:
JOHN RAY
1627 – 1705
botanist, zoologist, theologian
and traveller
the most distinguished british
naturalist of the 17th century
unveiled by david bellamy, botanist
11th October 1986

On the two other stones are the text the john ray statue was commissioned by the john ray trust, designed and sculpted by faith winter f.r.b.s. and the names of the principal sponsors.
