HYPERION (1930-1960

Despite his tiny size – he stood only 15.1½ hands high at maturity - hyperion, owned and bred by the 17th Earl of Derby, was a brilliant champion. Always
ridden by Tommy Weston, he won nine of his 13 races in three seasons and was placed three times, earning £29,859 prize money. He was trained at Stanley House
in Newmarket by George Lambton at two and three (when he was unbeaten) and Colledge Lender at four.

hyperion retired to stud in 1935 and became the most successful British-based stallion of the 20th century. He was six times champion sire (1940-42, 1945-46
and 1954) and four times champion broodmare sire (1948, 1957, 1967-68). His stock won 880 races in Britain and Ireland and his English Classic winners were:

godiva (1000 Guineas, Oaks 1940)
owen tudor (Derby 1941)
sun castle (St Leger 1941)
sun chariot (Fillies' Triple Crown of 1000 Guineas, Oaks, St Leger 1942)
hycilla (Oaks 1944)
sun stream (1000 Guineas, Oaks 1945)
hypericum (1000 Guineas 1946)
The influence of hyperion spread world-wide. The Queen's aureole (his best colt, winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes 1954) was
leading sire in Britain 1960-61. Other chappion stallion sons were aldis lamp (Belgium), cabrlaverock (Turkey), cihangir (Turkey), deimos
(South Africa), gulf stream (Argentina), heliopolis (usa), helios (Australia), high veldt (South Africa), hyperbole (Scandinavia),
hylander (Venezuela), hypocrite (Venezuela), leading light (Peru), orthodox (Denmark), ruthless (New Zealand) and selim hassan
(Argentina). Also of significance were gwen tudor (Britain), alibhai and khaled (usa) and aristophanes (Argentina).
Of his daughters, lady angela became dam of nearctic, sire of northern dancer.

This bronze statue of hyperion, by John Skeaping was bequeathed to the Jockey Club by Lord Derby and in 1996 was moved here from its original position at
Woodlands Stud, the horse's former home.
