Description

Marble statue of Carnot. The statue is the only part that remained from the large monument inaugurated in 1900 at the Place de la République (now Place Carnot, named after Lazare Carnot - bust in Magdeburg - the president's grandfather). This monument consisted of an obelisk, with the statue of Carnot in front, and several allegorical figures around it, placed in the center of a fountain basin. Because of the construction of the metro, the monument was dismantled and the statue was placed at the present location near the Prefecture.

Gambini wrote about the deconstruction of the original monument: "Of the complex monument to Sadi Carnot, erected in 1902 on a square near the spot where the President of the Republic had been assassinated in 1894, only his effigy was preserved: it was transferred to the gardens of the Préfecture."
