Description

The Hôtel de Ville was built between 1645 and 1651 by Simon Maupin. Following a fire in 1674, the building was restored and modified, including its facade, designed by Jules Hardouin-Mansart and his pupil Robert de Cotte. The facade is adorned with eight bronze medaillons, on the front side three Bourbon Kings and the Regent Anne of Austria. These were made by Claude Warin, the master-engraver of the Lyon Mint. The original medaillons disappeared in 1793 and were replaced about a century later. The medaillons of the Kings and the queen were made after Warin's originals by Fabisch, the others by Textor and Girardet.
