Chactas sur la tombe d'AtalaChactas Meditating on Atala's Tomb |
Francisque Duret
1836 |
Chactas mourning at Atala's Tomb is inspired by a story by Chateaubriand that portrays Native American idealism for Europeans in the 19th century. Atala is an Indian girl converted to Christianity who fell in love with Chactas. But she had promised her mother to remain a virgin and, despite her love, preferred to commit suicide (for the story, see Wikipedia).
