De La Bruyère is depicted leaning against a column with a bust of the Greek philosopher Theophrastus, with on the socle the Greek text ΘΕΟΦΡΑΣΤΟΣ ΜΕΛΑΝΤΑ ΕΡΕΣΙΟΣ (Theophrastos Melanta Eresios).

On the socle of De la Bruyère's statue is a quotation from his Les Caractères ou les Mœurs de ce siècle (1688):

DU MERITE PERSONNEL
&Aelig;mile etait ce que les plus grands
hommes ne deviennent qu'a force de
regles, de méditation et d'exercices.
