Description

In de central tower is a equestrian statue of Louis XIV (Saint-Germain-en-Laye 1638 - Versailles 1715), King of France, 1643-1715, who bought the city of Dunkerque in 1662 from the English (Wikipedia). Sculptor Edgard Boutry. Six (originally eight) statues of importan men from Dunkerque are between the windows in the left and right bay. These statues are sculpted by Augustin Peene.

  1. GUILLEMINOT
    Armand Charles Guilleminot (Dunkerque 1774 - Baden 1840), French general during the Napoleonic wars (Wikipedia).
  2. ROBERT DE CASSEL
    Robert of Cassel (1278-1331), second son of Count Robert III of Flanders, reorganized the "magistrate" of the city of Dunkerque. He also created three guilds (archers, crossbowmen and musketeers) to protect the city. At his death, his daughter Yolande inherited the lordship of Dunkerque (Wikipedia).
  3. EMMERY
    Jean-Marie Joseph Emmery (Dunkerque 1754-Dunkerque 1825), member of the Legislative National Assembly (1791), and later mayor of Dunkerque (1792-93 and 1802-05) (Wikipedia).
  4. VANSTABEL
    Pierre Jean Van Stabel (Dunkerque 1744-Dunkerque 1797), French naval officer and rear-admiral, famous for his role in the Bataille du 13 prairial an 2. (Wikipedia).
  5. BAUDOUIN III
    Count Baldwin III The Young of Flanders (c. 940-Bergues 962), briefly ruled the County of Flanders (958-962), together with his father Arnulf I (c. 890-965). He had built a wooden fortification around the town of Dunkerque (Wikipedia).
  6. JACOBSEN
    Michel Jacobsen (Dunkerque 1560-Sanlucar 1632), first of the Dunkerque privateers, Spanish vice-admiral (Wikipedia).
