Description
Large monument showing seven different figures and scenes:
- At the top stands the statue of France dictating the deeds of her children to History.
- Soldiers led by the winged Victory spring from the pedestal.
- The dead German eagle under a broken tomb stone.
On the corners of the pedestal sit four people representing the horror of war:
- Forced labor: a bearded man holding a dead worker with a pickaxe.
- Shipwreck: woman with a child in her arm and a drowning figure in front of her.
- Aerial bombardment: mother with two children between ruins.
- The death of a loved one: woman with a mourning figure on her lap.
On the sides of the pedestal are the names of the battles: MARNE · YSER | ALSACE · FLANDRE · CHAMPAGNE | ARTOIS · AISNE · VOSGES | ARGONNE · VERDUN · SOMME.
On three sides of the pedestal are the names of the fallen during the First World War.
