Description

Sculpture representing France supporting a dying soldier who drops his gun. At their feet, a young child recovers the gun, while another is supports the anchor of hope.

On 26 September 1877, two reliefs in bronze are added to the pedestal.

Cavallerie. Combat de Fond-de-la-Cuve near Mars-la-Tour.
The man on horses are, from left to right:

  • The son of general Henry
  • General de Vernéville
  • General Legrand
  • General de Ladmirault
  • General de Cissey
  • General de Montaigu
Between Vernéville and Legrand the head of the painter Alexandre Protais (1826-1890) with a fedora hat is visible.
That of the south face (photo left) shows . That of the north face (photo right) evokes the infantry fight that took place on 16 and 18 August 1870.
