Description

The façade of the Palais de l'Université - at present Faculté de Droit et des Sciences Economiques - is adorned with statues, medallions, busts and names of illustrous men from or educated in Lorraine.

Four statues of the founders of th academy above the entrance porch, sculpted by Viard:
- Charles de Lorraine (Joinville 1524 - Avignon 1574), Duke of Chevreuse, Cardinal, Bishop of Metz, co-founder of the university in 1572 in Pont-à-Mousson, depicted with the bull of Pope Gregory XIII (Wikipedia).
- Charles III, duc de Lorraine (Nancy 1543 - Nancy 1608), duke of Lorraine from 1545, co-founder of the university (Wikipedia).
- Napoleon III (Paris 1808 - Chislehurst 1872), president of France 1848-1852, emperor of France (1852-1870) created in Nancy the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 1854, and that of Law in 1864, requested by Prosper Guerrier de Dumast (bust) (Wikipedia).
- Stanislas Leszczynski (L'viv 1677 - Lunéville 1766), king of Poland (1707-1709) and duke of Lorraine and Bar (1737-1766), created in 1752 the Royal College of Medecin in Nancy (Wikipedia).
Six portrait medallions are in the porch, and in the left and right wing respectively:

Annotation

The Palais de l'Académie (later Palais de l'University) was inaugurated in 1862 and built after designs of the architect Prosper Morey (1805-1886) as result of action taken by the lotharingist Prosper Guerrier de Dumast (whose bust is in the porch of the Palais de l'Université).

Sculptor
